The Hunt: Part 2

June 27th, 2009

After much deliberation (as in a 10 minute discussion on how cool this would be), we’ve decide to start a rolling blog topic about the current hunts we are on. A list that will continue to grow and form has been started. Included will be the artist name, album name, and start date for The Hunt for the album. We will update the list as we find the albums and if anyone happens to have or find any of the albums, please let us know! As we discover and purchase them for ourselves, we will include the price paid for the album, the location it was finally found, and the end date of The Hunt.

New Old Music

June 20th, 2009
Pandora Radio

Pandora Radio

With all the latest technology, social networking websites, search engines, online webcasts, music streaming, and even iTunes latest feature Genius, it’s not difficult to find new music. Even unsigned musicians can be heard across the world using the web. I’ve ”discovered” the majority of my recent favorites using these methods. iTunes suggested Joshua Radin, Pandora introduced me to Dustin Kensrue, Sirius Satellite Radio brought me Ray Lamontagne (featured below) as well as Newton Faulkner (also featured below), and YouTube brought me Zee Ati. A MySpace spam from an unsigned local band from Washington called J Minus brought about a two month obsession that could only be ended with my computer eating shit (not J Minus’s fault). And thanks to Google, I’ve gained much education and respect for “the little guys” in the industry. They intrigue me, whether they’re from today, yesterday, or forever ago.

Newton Faulkner – Gone in the Morning

Newton Faulkner – Dreamcatch Me

I guess I can start with a generalized review.

Newton Faulkner’s album “Hand Made By Robots” is one of the most creative, fun, and intense albums I’ve heard in quite some time. I first heard his popular song “Dream Catch Me” on Sirius Radio’s Coffee House (by far the greatest channel Sirius has, FYI). I was immediately chair dancing. While I don’t recommend chair dancing while driving, I won’t lie and say thats not exactly what happened. I spent weeks hopping around to that song. Naturally I assumed there was no chance in hell the whole album would induce so much energy and fun.

The New Addition

June 17th, 2009

A couple of weeks ago I bought (without permission) and new/old turntable (Yamaha YP-211) from John down at Eastside Records in Tempe, Arizona.  Cost about $80 bucks after tax.  Not a bad find!  Here are some pics for you. (Notice the homemade anti-skate weight too…dental floss and a nut lol)

The Hunt

June 17th, 2009
I recently rediscovered the joys, and pains, of vinyl.

There has always been some presence of the medium in my life. Be it a brightly colored, playschool record player, a rickety old turn table and a stack of dusty 70’s and 80’s records used more as a piece of furniture to toss keys and purses on, or be it the final unwanted leftovers after a loved one’s passing, I can’t remember a time where there was not vinyl and/or turn tables somewhere in the background of each memory.

May 11th, 2009

Headed down to a record shop in Tempe, Arizona called “Eastside Records” Its a very cool little shop.  This is only my second time going down there and I will have a lot more time to mingle this time.  I will try to take a few pictures to share.

More to come.

Matt Costa – Unfamilliar Faces

Matt Costa – Emergency Call

Oh boy, oh Boy….where to start with this one.  I ordered this album special from the record shop for the fact that the music is really good and I happen to like Matt as a person.  I have had the pleasure of meeting him on a few occasions and each meet was pleasant and definitely enhances the listening experience.  What doesn’t enhance the listening experience is the fact that the mix on this album is such shit that I would rather listen to it on Mp3…..yes; MP3.  Every couple of weeks I throw it on the platter and give it a spin just to see if my feeling change about it.  It hasn’t.

Ray Lamontagne – Trouble

Ray LaMontagne – Shelter

The only thing that I can say about this album is, Holy Shit! The first time I downloaded the CD and listened to it with Bethany (my girlfriend) we were in such awe about the quality of the lyrics and the simplicity of the composition we were in love with Ray all over again.  As with most great music I think I discover…it has most of the time been discovered first by B and probably been brought up to me and; of course I forget.  The irony of this is that when I think I discover something amazing; she reminds me of this fact.  But nevertheless, we are blown away.
